R.O.C. Timorplein, gedeelte I.I.R.E. Lombokstraat 40 (engelse tekst hieronder)

I.I.R.E., het International institute for Research and Education (of Institut International de Recherche et de Formation, I.I.R.F.) is een internationaal studie– en scholingscentrum en een ontmoetingsplaats voor progressieve activisten. Het I.I.R.E. organiseert cursussen, seminars en lezingen en heeft een uitgebreide bibliotheek.

De verschillende instellingen en activiteiten die samen in het vernieuwde gebouw Timorplein zijn gehuisvest (o.a. ‘Stay Okay’, Kriterion, Citynet en Cybershoek) gaan er van uit dat ze samen werken en van elkaars aanwezigheid kunnen profiteren.
De ruimte van I.I.R.E. is over vier verdiepingen verdeeld; de lagere verdiepingen zijn meer publiek, naar boven toe zijn de ruimten meer voor eigen gebruik. Op de begane grond zijn de entree en een eetzaal met keuken. Hier kunnen ongeveer 40 personen eten en deze zaal kan ook gebruikt worden voor vergaderingen.
Op de eerste verdieping liggen een grote (in tweeën te delen) conferentiezaal (voor ca. 100 personen) en twee kleinere vergaderruimten. Op deze verdieping is een grote centrale hal te gebruiken als foyer en een informele zitgelegenheid. Aangrenzend is een kleine pantry. De zalen met bijbehorende faciliteiten (vertaalinstallatie, keuken) worden ook aan derden verhuurd.
De tweede verdieping is het eigen domein van het I.I.R.E. en huisvest de bibliotheek, het kantoor en drie docentenkamers (extra kantoorruimte en/of kamers voor langer in het Instituut verblijvende stafleden). Voor de bibliotheek moest speciaal een staalconstructie worden aangebracht. Op de derde verdieping zijn zeven slaapkamers die in beheer zijn bij StayOkay en ook door hen worden verhuurd wanneer ze niet door het I.I.R.E. worden gebruikt.
De eerste en tweede verdieping hebben een zodanige hoogte dat er plaatselijk tussenverdiepingen gemaakt konden worden, welke onder meer gebruik zijn voor vertaalruimte, extra opslagruimte en extra slaapruimte. De centrale hal met de trap en een daklicht legt de verbinding tussen de verdiepingen en is zo ontmoetingsplaats en het hart van het gebouw.

I.I.R.E. Timorplein, a new building, a new life

I.I.R.E., the International institute for Research and Education (IRRF in French) is a center in the service of progressive activists around the world. It’s new base in Amsterdam will be housed in a former technical school. Other occupants of the building will be among others: ‘Stay Okay’, a non-profit budget Hotel accomodation with Restaurant (Youth Hostel Association) , a cinema, a cybercafe, various small scale offices and workplaces. The idea is that each of these activities can profit from the presence of the others. Between these activities there will be a certain amount of interaction and enhancement.

I.I.R.E.’s space consists of 4 floors:
An open more public ground floor, up to the conference facilities on the first floor, the more secluded library and I.I.R.E.’s office space on the second floor and the private bedrooms on the third floor. The central spaces on all three floors can be used as a kind of meeting and recreation space, also there can be magazines and selected books. Light will come from above through a skylight. The maximum amount of people that can be accomodated for sleeping in the I.I.R.E. part is approximately 30. Sleeping facilities can be extended by renting part of the adjoining Stay Okay rooms.

Ground floor: Entrance hall and restaurant
Entrance hall with open stair to the first floor. There is a small lift up to the first and second floor. From the entrance hall there is access to a dining hall with an open kitchen. Up to about 40 people can be seated and served here. This space can also be used for meetings. Larger groups can have meals at the Stay Okay facilities. We would like the ground floor to be a relatively public space where people could wonder in and, read current magazines and get acquainted with I.I.R.E.

First floor: Conference facilities
This floor houses a main conference room, seating a maximum of 100 people. Translation facilities are located on a mezzanine under wich there is storage space for chairs and tables not in use. On the other side of the central hall are three smaller conference rooms of which two can be joined together. One of the smaller rooms is a smoking and coffee room also to be used as social space. Adjacent to- and in the central hall are a coffeecounter, informal seating and a stand with current magazines and general reading. This floor can be rented out to third parties, possibly in connection with the StayOkay facilities.

Second floor: Library, Office, fellowrooms
The main space on this floor is the library, adjacent to this is the office for I.I.R.E.’s staff. As the spaces in the building are high there are mezzanine’s. On the street side of the hall are three rooms to be used by fellows staying at the institute or alternatively as extra (quiet) office and study space. When there are a lot of people staying at the institute extra sleeping space can be found on the mezzanines of the fellowrooms.

Third floor: Bedrooms
On this floor are the main sleeping facilities. Rooms are to Stay Okay standards and have inroom bathrooms. When not used by the Institute rooms can be rented out to Stayokay, on the other hand I.I.R.E. can hire extra bedrooms from Stayokay when necessary.
